Want to Protect Your Brain as You Age? Don’t Ignore Your Muscle
Most people think about strength training in terms of getting stronger, looking better, or maintaining independence as they age.
But building and maintaining muscle may have benefits that extend well beyond your physical health.
A recent study published in Clinical Nutrition followed nearly 490,000 adults for a median of more than 13 years and examined the relationship between muscle, body fat, strength, and dementia risk.
The results add another compelling reason to make strength training a lifelong habit.
What the Study Found
Researchers divided participants into groups based on their muscle health and body composition.
People with both low muscle and higher levels of body fat, a condition known as sarcopenic obesity, had a 34% higher risk of developing dementia compared with people who did not have sarcopenia or obesity.
But body fat wasn't the entire story.
Participants with sarcopenia, or low muscle without obesity, had a 30% higher risk of dementia as well. Meanwhile, obesity without sarcopenia was not associated with the same increased risk in this study.
That distinction is important.
It suggests that when we think about healthy aging, the number on the scale may not tell us nearly as much as we think it does.
How much muscle you maintain and how well that muscle functions may matter too.
Strength May Matter Just as Much as Muscle
The researchers also looked at grip strength in a smaller group of more than 54,000 participants over time.
Grip strength is commonly used in research as a simple measurement of overall muscle function.
The researchers found a strong relationship between declining grip strength and future dementia risk. As grip strength decreased, dementia risk increased, regardless of changes in body composition.
In other words, having muscle is important.
But being able to actually use that muscle and remain strong may be just as important.
Why Muscle Matters More as We Get Older
We naturally begin losing muscle mass and strength as we age. If we don't do anything to counteract that decline, everyday activities can gradually become more difficult.
Climbing stairs becomes harder.
Getting off the floor becomes harder.
Carrying groceries becomes harder.
Balance and stability can decline.
Eventually, muscle loss can contribute to reduced mobility and independence.
That age-related loss of muscle mass and function is known as sarcopenia, and resistance exercise is one of the primary tools we have for fighting against it.
This research suggests that maintaining muscle may potentially matter for brain health as well.
The Goal Shouldn't Just Be Weight Loss
Your goal should be to build a body that continues working well for you decades from now.
That's why I would much rather see someone focus on improving their body composition, strength, movement, and overall fitness than obsess over reaching an arbitrary number on the scale.
Your goal shouldn't simply be to weigh less.
What Can You Do About It?
Fortunately, maintaining muscle is something we can influence.
A few fundamentals go a long way:
Strength train consistently.
Use progressively challenging resistance over time.
Eat enough protein to support muscle maintenance and recovery.
Stay physically active outside of the gym.
Prioritize sleep and recovery.
Avoid letting long periods of inactivity become the norm.
You don't need to train like a bodybuilder.
You don't need to spend two hours in the gym.
And you don't need to wait until you're older to start thinking about muscle loss.
Building strength now is an investment in what you'll be capable of doing later.
One Important Caveat
This study does not prove that having more muscle will prevent dementia.
It was an observational study, meaning researchers identified relationships between muscle health, body composition, strength, and future dementia diagnoses. Other lifestyle and health factors may contribute to those relationships as well.
But when this finding is combined with everything else we already know about strength, mobility, metabolic health, injury prevention, and maintaining independence as we age, the message is still pretty compelling:
Don't wait until you're losing strength to start caring about it.
The goal of strength training isn't simply to lift heavier weights.
It's to remain capable.
To keep moving.
To continue doing the activities you enjoy.
And potentially, to support more than just your muscles along the way.
